In the United States, unemployment benefits are funded through direct taxes on employers; internationally, government may fund payments through budget appropriations without a specific tax. Subsidiary of EDS, an HP Company, To Modernize Washington State Unemployment Insurance Tax System
HERNDON, Va. – EDS, an HP company, has been awarded a $24 million contract to develop and design the new tax system for the Washington Employment Security Department (WA ESD). The Next-Generation Tax System will replace the state's antiquated TAXIS/WAGES system, which supports the unemployment insurance (UI) tax program. The UI tax program provides benefits from the UI Trust Fund to those who are temporarily unemployed.

- The State of Maryland, with our help, developed the Maryland Automated Benefits System (MABS) which provides complete, integrated support for the full lifecycle of benefit claims processing. MABS also interfaces with various entities from claimants to state and federal agencies.
- The Michigan Bureau of Workers & Unemployment Compensation needed to reduce administrative costs associated with records management and increase productivity by more efficiently processing cases. EDS, now HP, as its partner, worked with stakeholders to create a central document management system, web-based user interface, custom search, scalable infrastructure and applications, and indexing of high-volume faxes. The system increases process performance, reduces cycle times and improves productivity.
