With its acquisition of RailTex, RailAmerica adopted that company's EDS-designed intranet solution for consolidating information across disparate platforms and systems. EDS customized this solution to RailAmerica's specific needs integrating accounting, payroll, budget and freight operations, all from different platforms into one centralized intranet source. This data warehouse and decision-support application called Executive Information System (EIS) arms executives with a comprehensive, consistent view of performance, both within the corporation as a whole and within individual railroads. It also allows management to generate and analyze data through reports to better define strategic business objectives. Later, when the rail leader wanted to transition IT operations to its Florida headquarters to centralize its corporate functions, EDS again put RailAmerica on the right track.
