To automate its ticketing systems, Transport for London chose the TranSys consortium, with principal partners EDS and Cubic Transportation Systems, to design, build and manage one of the world's most complex smart card systems. First, we installed electronic gates and card readers at Underground and selected mainline stations, along with new or upgraded ticketing machines at every Tube station. Later, we installed smart card readers at Tube station ticket offices, on all buses and Ticket Stop retail outlets, and at selected National Rail stations. We also developed the Oyster card, which allows users to purchase travel in advance at stations, via the Internet or telephone, or in retail Ticket Stops. Since implementation, ticket fraud has been substantially reduced.
