To integrate a new passenger service system (PSS) into its IT environment, Lufthansa needed to find a way to bridge the new system with data housed in its numerous legacy applications. The airline looked to HP and its Airline service-oriented architecture (SOA) for a best-in-class common platform that now standardizes processes and streamlines services across the enterprise, including Lufthansa’s partner carriers.
Deutsche Lufthansa AG is a major carrier in the Star Alliance. Voted the Best Airline Alliance at the Business Traveller Awards and the world’s leading airline group in a study conducted by Skytrax, the Star Alliance brings together 21 major international carriers. The alliance provides passengers with greater flight availability and the convenience of planning multi-carrier travel to even the most remote destinations with a single reservation. When flying with Star Alliance carriers like Lufthansa, passengers enjoy reciprocal frequent-flyer programs, lounge access, and integrated scheduling and pricing. However, making changes to a specific leg of a multicarrier journey, such as upgrading to first class or applying miles to a flight, proved to be less convenient due to the IT barriers between airline companies.
