In March 2002, Toyota Motor Corporation and Peugeot Societe Anonyme (PSA) embarked on a joint venture to build compact cars in the Czech Republic. The company called Toyota Peugeot Citroen Automobile (TPCA) would develop and manufacture 300,000 small passenger cars every year: the Toyota Aygo, the Peugeot 107 and the Citroen C1.
But first, TPCA needed to build a brand new green-field assembly plant in Kolin, near Prague, Czech Republic, with production targeted to begin in time for the unveiling of the new compact cars at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2005.
While PSA brought its material sourcing expertise to the table, Toyota contributed design and engineering, its famous Toyota Production System (TPS), and its IT infrastructure.
Having worked with EDS before, Toyota’s Brussels-based subsidiary, Toyota Motor Europe, chose EDS for its automotive industry expertise and experience with similar plant start-ups. As Toyota’s IT partner, EDS would manage application development and implementation of the European IT application systems for the new vehicle assembly plant. Covering a wide range of business functions, the project included developing applications for parts flow systems, vehicle systems, finance and administration systems, and service parts systems. What’s more, these systems had to connect Toyota’s and PSA’s corporate systems, Toyota Europe Sales systems and local TPCA plant floor systems.
