Semantic Interoperability: Standardizing Healthcare Terms

Content starts here

HP leverages the existing coded ontologies, terminologies, controlled vocabularies, and classification systems—collectively referred to as terminologies—as the source of truth. These are usually highly domain-specific—International Classification of Diseases (ICD) for diagnosis, Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine—Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT) for general medical, Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC) for labs—and are adjudicated by an organization that is responsible for the accuracy of the content (World Health Organization/Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization, and Regenstrief Institute, respectively).
