Security—Vital To the Smart Grid

Content starts here

Get Smart About Security

A number of economic, social, political and market forces are pushing utilities to adopt a more intelligent approach to the generation and delivery of electricity. The emerging Smart Grid encompasses far more than the traditional utility distribution network. Made possible by a new generation of embedded computing, advanced metering and data management technologies, Smart Grids will allow utilities to anticipate and shape consumer demand for electrical power.

Currently, Smart Grid investment is focused on smart meters, and smart homes, with smart thermostats, appliances, and in-home control devices that take advantage of time-of-use rates and demand response programs. At the cutting edge, Smart Grid also takes advantage of additional green power sources such as solar panels and wind turbines, provides the ability to handle plug-in hybrid vehicles, enables automated outage notification, and reduces the environmental impact of power generation and encourages energy conservation. Since there will be so many intelligent devices attached to the Smart Grid, and so much of everyday life and society could be disrupted by a malicious attack, security is vital to the Smart Grid. There is a lot at stake.
