Navy Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI): Managing a Multi-Vendor Environment
Bringing Continuous Innovation to NMCI
While NMCI operates as a unified and standardized enterprise IT platform, it is actually a segmented services environment – managed by HP – that includes top-tier and small business providers of best-in-class hardware, software, networking, security and implementation services.
HP handles the majority of the work on NMCI and is engaged at all levels across the enterprise. Experienced HP employees work round-the-clock in order to maintain the levels of performance, security and reliability needed by Navy and Marine Corps end users.
In addition to its own significant contributions to NMCI, HP collaborates with many top-tier technology providers including Dell, Apple, HP, Cisco, Symantec, McAfee and Oracle. More than 400 small businesses from all corners of the United States have also helped make NMCI a success.
NMCI is built predominantly from commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and software. Having COTS solutions enables NMCI to streamline the use of new innovations and enables interoperability with other Department of Defense networks. All COTS solutions, however, must be tailored by HP in order to operate effectively on NMCI's massive scale.
Through the efforts of HP and its universe of technology partners, NMCI provides the Department of the Navy with consolidated and standardized network operations services, security and user assistance across every level of command. Because of NMCI, information assurance compliance is now measurable and enforceable. User communities with unique or ad hoc service needs are accommodated by smart customization making maximum use of standard components to generate appropriate solutions.
NMCI is proving to be an effective means for evolving the Navy's information technology capabilities in a systematic, secure and reliable manner.
